Ever wondered what photographers mean when they say they don’t deliver RAW files? Or maybe you’ve been tempted to ask for them after your photo shoot. It’s a question we photographers get every now and then, and I get it - you’ve invested in your photos, so naturally you want to make sure you’re getting everything.

I decided to write this blog because there’s a lot of mystery (and sometimes misunderstanding) around RAW files. People often think that asking for the RAWs means they’ll get “extra” images or better quality - when in reality, that’s not how it works at all.

The truth is, in 99% of cases, you’re not missing out on anything by not receiving the RAWs. In fact, the final edited images you get are already the best of the best, carefully chosen and polished to reflect my style and your story in the most beautiful way possible.

So, let’s break down what RAW files actually are, why you don’t really need them (if you do not know what to do with them), and why your finished gallery is already all you’ll ever want.

What Are RAW Files, Really?

A RAW file is basically the unprocessed version of a photo - straight out of the camera, before any editing, color correction, or adjustments. It’s like the first & rough draft of a book before it’s been proofread, polished, and designed for print.

On their own, RAWs look flat, dull, and unfinished. The colors are muted, the contrast is low, and the image lacks that special touch that makes a photo feel alive. That’s because RAW files are meant to be worked on -they’re the starting point, not the final product.

They’re also massive in size (often 20–50 MB per image), which means even a small shoot can easily fill up multiple hard drives. And here’s the kicker: most people can’t even open them without specialized software like Lightroom or Photoshop.

So when someone says, “Can I get the RAWs?”, what they’re really asking for is the ingredients - not the finished meal. You can’t enjoy them as they are, and without the right “recipe” (editing process), they’re not very useful.

In short, RAW files are the behind-the-scenes version of your images - full of potential, but not ready for the spotlight just yet.

Do You Really Want the RAWs?

Let’s be honest: if you don’t have editing software, know how to color grade, or have room for 60+ GB of files sitting on your hard drive, RAWs aren’t just useless - they’re overwhelming. They’re big, they’re clunky, and they’re not designed for casual viewing unfortunately.

Most people ask for RAWs because they think they’re missing out on something - as if the “real” magic is hidden in those files. But when you hire a professional photographer, you’re not just paying for someone to click a shutter. You’re investing in their artistic vision, their editing style, and their ability to turn those flat RAWs into the beautiful, finished images you fell in love with in their portfolio.

Unless you’re a photographer yourself or planning to edit the photos professionally (which, in my experience, is rarely the case), RAW files won’t actually serve you.

What you really want - and what you’ll get - are the best, fully polished photographs that already capture your story in the most beautiful way possible.

“Trust the artist, not the tools. The magic isn’t in the files - it’s in the creative eye and the heart behind the lens.”

Here’s a photo from one of my recent shoots of the beloved and famous band The London Essentials in Mykonos. The RAW file is on the left - it’s okay as it is, but the editing in the finished photo on the right is what really brings it to life and gives it everything it needs to truly shine!

Why We Don’t Deliver RAW Files (and Why They’d Be Wildly Expensive)

What we already talked about: RAW files are not finished products. Handing them over is like giving you an unfinished painting - the brushstrokes aren’t complete, the colors aren’t balanced, and it’s missing the details that make it a work of art. It’s not only incomplete, but it’s also not a true reflection of our style or standards.

Here’s why most professional photographers don’t give out RAWs:

  • They’re not usable without editing software - You can’t simply double-click and admire them like a JPEG.
  • They don’t represent the quality and brand we stand for - We’ve built our reputation on delivering polished, professional images.
  • They contain every imperfection - things we’d normally fix during editing, like lens dust spots, color inconsistencies, or lighting adjustments.
  • It’s not industry standard - Almost no professional photographer includes RAWs in their packages for these reasons.

And on the rare occasion a photographer does sell RAW files? Expect a very hefty price tag. Why? Because you’re essentially buying the rights to our unfinished work - and giving someone else the ability to alter it in ways that could misrepresent our brand. That’s a big deal in the creative world, and it’s why the cost is often 10x (or more) than the finished gallery.

Make Sure You Love Your Photographer’s Work

At the end of the day, the best way to avoid even thinking about RAW files is to hire a photographer whose work you already love. When you trust their vision, style, and editing, you won’t feel like you’re “missing out” on anything.

A photographer’s portfolio is essentially a promise: This is what your images will look like when I deliver them to you. If you’re excited about what you see, then the finished, edited photos will be all you need - and they’ll be ready to print, share, and treasure right away.

So instead of worrying about getting the RAWs, focus on finding someone whose final galleries make you feel something. That way, you can relax, enjoy your day, and know the photos you receive will be exactly what you hoped for (or better).

Bonus: A Note on Trust

Asking for RAW files often (though not always) comes from a place of uncertainty - and that’s perfectly understandable. It’s your day, your memories, and you want to feel confident in how they’re captured.

But here’s the thing: trust is a two-way street. When you choose a photographer whose work you love and give them the creative freedom to do what they do best, the results are almost always better than you imagined. That trust allows us to pour our full energy and artistry into your images - and that’s when the real magic happens.

Last Words from Max

All of this comes from a place of love - not “I know better than you.” When I started photography over 14 years ago, I had no idea about all these behind-the-scenes details. Believe it or not, I was shooting in JPEG for almost the first four years of my career (any pros reading this know that’s a big no-no in the industry haha!).

So here’s what I want to say: you don’t need the RAW files. What you really need is a photographer who truly gets you, captures you beautifully, and delivers images you’ll love forever. Everything else? Let us handle that behind the scenes.

Now, you might find a photographer who will give you the RAWs or even sell them to you - but be prepared: the RAWs are usually more than 10 times the price of the final edited images. That’s because handing over RAWs isn’t just about sending large files; it involves copyright laws, protecting our brand, and giving away the foundation of our creative work.

And here’s the truth: unless you know exactly how to work with them, RAW files are just like ingredients sitting in your fridge. If you don’t know what to cook or how to prepare them, they’ll just take up space - and won’t be much good to you.
